Details of a Gustavian Sofa
In the 1770's the outlines of furniture got straighter and the details symmetric which this sofa is a perfect example of. Antiquity styled decor such as leaf tip carvings, laurels wags and corner flowers were the highest fashion and repeated in symmetric patterns all over the furniture. Inspiration came from the finds made during the excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum, Italy. The period in Sweden was named after kind Gustav III who was the front runner for the style and implemented it by ordering furniture and interiors from the continent.
